One Laptop, two systems

THE GOAL of the nonprofit One Laptop per Child project has always been exciting: build a cheap, sturdy laptop and give it to poor children in developing countries to improve their educations.

more stories like this

Getting from this idea to reality has been tough, but One Laptop has been making progress. The result is the small, green XO laptop. The machine used the free open-source Linux operating system, which users can modify and customize. Mexico, Peru, and other countries have already ordered 600,000 of the XOs.

Still, there have been bumps. Countries have been asking a nagging question: Does the XO run Microsoft Windows?

Because the answer had been no, some countries hesitated, saying Windows would give their children more practical skills and access to more software. But Microsoft wouldn't participate in the project.

Now the adults have settled their differences. One Laptop and Microsoft are going to team up, offering laptops that will have both Linux and Windows. This way, children will be able to swim in the same ocean as most of the computing world. And Microsoft will be closer to its goal of reaching "the next 1 billion people who are not yet realizing the benefits of technology" by 2015.

Not everyone thinks this is good news. As American users know, Windows can be a glitchy affair not to be wished upon the world's children.

And while One Laptop's early commitment to open-source software will remain intact because Linux will still be available on its laptops, one of the nonprofit's executives left because he says he can be more effective developing open-source educational software outside the organization.

Ultimately, though, One Laptop is not about the adults but the children, and they will benefit. With an XO they can learn to launch their own computing revolutions.

Dell has the first 320GB 7,200rpm laptop drive

Desktop types are always kicking their laptop counterparts around, stealing their lunch money, and making fun of their slow and undersized hard drives.

Most laptops have slower 5,400rpm or even 4,200rpm hard drives, usually between 120GB and 250GB in size. For high-end types, there are 320GB laptop hard drives, and also 7,200rpm laptop hard drives, but you couldn't get both of those specs in the same laptop drive [dramatic pause...] until now.

Fujitsu, Hitachi, and Seagate have all recently announced 320GB 7,200rpm laptop hard drives, but Dell is the first to stick them in a consumer laptop, using the Seagate drive in the massive 17-inch XPS M1730.

"Laptop users want every bit of capacity, performance, and durability that desktop PCs deliver," says Michael Wingert, Seagate's executive vice president and general manager, Personal Compute Business,
We checked out the Dell Web site and the 320GB drives are available right now, for $50 more than a standard 5,400rpm 320GB drive. Look for these to show up in Alienware laptops next, followed by desktop replacement systems from other manufacturers.

Samsung i900 specifications and pictures leaked

A Chinese website has outed the specifications of Samsung's latest Windows Mobile creation, the i900. That is not all that they revealed, as they also scored some live pictures of the device. The i900 is an interesting move for Samsung, as it abandons a traditional keyboard, for a all touch interface. Call me crazy, but I think I am starting to see a trend.

Samsung may be dropping the keyboard on the device, but that is about all that they are dropping. The i900 is absolutely packed with features, and you better believe that they do not disappoint. The i900 has a 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, and the whole package is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1. It also packs HSDPA, FM radio, GPS, TV out, and is 13mm to boot.

It does not appear from the pictures that the device will have a customized user interface on top of Windows Mobile. It would have been nice to see a ported version of Croix make it to the device, but considering the features this thing has I am going to let that slide. It is not known when the i900 will be available, or if it will make it to the states. Here is to hoping though.

Samsung Reveals Its 3G iPhone Killer

Apple's much anticipated second generation handset hasn't even been announced yet, but Samsung's latest means it will face an immediate baptism of fire.

The 'SGH-i900' - on raw specifications alone - is the most powerful multimedia mobile phone we've seen to date, so I'm just going to cut to the chase:

HSDPA connectivity, a 3.5in 400 x 240 pixel touchscreen LCD, 16GB of onboard memory, GPS, 5MP digital camera with autofocus & front mounted VGAer for video calls, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.2 with A2DP, TV-Out, FM radio and a microSD expansion slot. The whole lot runs on the latest Windows Mobile 6.1 OS and at 112 x 56 x 13mm its no larger than Apple's pride and joy either. Missing elements? Erm... errr... you got me!

The snap above makes it appear that Samsung will stick with the basic WM 6.1 interface here, but given its a prototype on show here and we've seen what it can do with the F490 and F480 I'd be amazed if we aren't in for more of the same with the i900.
When can we expect to see this powerhouse hit the market? I suspect Samsung would like to see the i900 hit the market as close to the 3G iPhone/iPhone Black as possible, but my head tells me late Q3...

Samsung leapfrogs past Motorola as India's No.3 mobile player

As Nokia maintains its lead in the Indian mobile phone market followed by Sony Ericsson, the South Korean company, Samsung took the third slot with considerable increases in its market share.

The latest ORG data reveals that Samsung is the only prominent player to have increased its market share in the January-March period. It has gained market share from 5.7 percent in January to 7 percent in March. Motorola India's market shares have fallen from 6.7 percent to 5.9 percent, while Sony Ericsson remained at the second slot with 8.1 percent market shares.

Samsung Telecommunications India's country head, Sunil Dutt said that the company has benefitted from the launch of new products and on roping in of Aamir Khan as their new brand ambassador.

Dutt said, "In January-March, we registered a good growth in our mobile phone business based on our channel expansion program, new product launches like the Guru 100, SGH-G800, Samsung i450 to name a few, as well as our brand activity involving Aamir Khan."

Even though Nokia had a considerable lead in comparison, the Finnish handset giant's market shares have dropped from 72.3 percent to 69.5 percent in India.

Nokia India managing director (mobile phones), D. Shivakumar declined to comment on the issue saying, "As a policy, we do not comment on market share."

Motorola India director (marketing, mobile devices), Lloyd Mathias said, "The only thing we can say is that there has been a rationalization of our portfolio in India. We are not competing in all segments and the focus has moved towards mid-to-high end phones. In fact, our average selling prices have increased in India," in response to reactions coming in after Motorola's recent announcement that its global handset shipment has dipped from 40.9 million phones in quarter four of 2007 to some 27.4 million handsets in quarter one of 2008.

Samsung, on the other hand, with this recent achievement has become the world's second largest handset vendor. Further, a series of new products at entry-level and premium segment are in the pipeline to further consolidate the company's Indian share. With existing vendors coming up with their plans in the mid-to-high end phone segment as Apple's much-hyped iPhone set to debut in India towards end of the year, Samsung has its sights on doubling its Indian market share by the end of 2008.

Microsoft to Put Windows on OLPC Laptops
After months of dilly-dallying, Microsoft has finally given the green signal to offering its Windows operating system (OS) on One Laptop Per Child's (OLPC) XO laptops for children in developing countries. So far, XO laptops have been using the Linux operating system.

Buyers of XO laptops will now have the option to choose the OS that is best suited to their requirements. The intention is to eventually create a dual-boot version of the XO laptop that has the ability to host both Windows and Linux operating systems.
The XO laptops are being sold mainly to education ministries and governments familiar with Windows-based computing, hence the reluctance to buy machines that do not run Windows that could also be the reason for slow initial sales. The general belief among buyers is that Windows-based machines will open doors for students and educators to access Windows-based educational software and tools as also a broad ecosystem providing relevant content.

Trials of Windows-based XO laptops are slated to begin next month in key markets with general availability expected by September. The OLPC Project is also planning on getting a Windows version of its 'Sugar' educational software hitherto workable only with Linux.

But as is the case with everything much else, putting windows on the XO machines will increase their price by $10:$3 in terms of licensing fees Microsoft charges in some developing nations under a program called 'Unlimited Potential' plus the cost of extra hardware required. Which means the XO laptops will now cost more than the existing price of $200 each. The OLPC claims it will eventually bring down prices to $100 as preordained at the time of launch (we sincerely hope so!).

3G iPhone is on the Way!
Any which way you look at it, Apple's iPhone does manage to get around! Rumor has it that a Gen-Next 3G iPhone is on its way. Stoking the speculation are a couple of factors.

One, as reported by a leading tech Web site, a top-brass O2 (exclusive iPhone carrier in UK and Ireland) executive vaguely said that Apple and Telefonica (of which O2 is a subsidiary) will make a joint statement in 'the coming weeks'. Two, rather uncharacteristic of Apple -- the company has let its iPhone inventory go limp in recent weeks. The public announcement came earlier this week -- that Apple online stores in the US and UK have run out of iPhones -- with no indication whatsoever about re-stocking. O2 did much the same thing last month when it slashed iPhone prices leading to an erosion of inventory, giving no indication of renewing stock. Three, the much-publicized deals Apple is getting into with carriers across the globe. Take India for instance; apparently two carriers, Vodafone and Bharti Airtel seem set to market the iPhone in the country.

Meanwhile, Apple, in characteristic fashion, continues to keep mum about any such phone. For the showman he is known to be, Steve Jobs might be leaving the best for the last, i.e. the annual developers conference scheduled for June 9 this year. All eyes already on Jobs, have we?

Touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder to launch in Q3?

If this is real, the Bold is not the biggest announcement of RIM for the year. The first information on the BlackBerry Thunder was reported by BGR, revealing the first all-touch phone of the manufacturer. This is one of its codenames and others refer to it as the BlackBerry Storm or BlackBerry 9500. As it can be seen from the illustrated picture (not real), on its front it has a huge display and only four keys: send, end, BlackBerry menu and back.

According to the source, Thunder will be a CDMA/EVDO and GSM/HSDPA hybrid that can be used all over the world. It will be exclusively available with Verizon (in the U.S.) and Vodafone (in the rest of the world). However, if they cannot meet a specific sales quota, BlackBerry may dissolve the exclusivity and bring the phone to other carriers also. A 4G (LTE) support is also mentioned, but we don't really expect to see one in a device, rumored to launch in Q3 this year.

RIM's BlackBerry Bold aims at business users

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion Ltd ((RIMM.O) is launching a new high-end version of the BlackBerry aimed at its core base of business users, but it hopes the sleek new smartphone will also catch on with the broader retail market.

Shares of RIM jumped on Monday, climbing C$8.76, or 6.6 percent, to C$142.11 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. On Nasdaq, the stock was up $8.84, or 6.7 percent, at $141.61.

The BlackBerry Bold, as the new smartphone is called, is the first BlackBerry to support high-speed HSDPA cellular networks and comes with integrated GPS, Wi-Fi and a host of multimedia features.

"It's really a step up in function in many core aspects of the system," RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie said in an interview.

The smartphone rolls out globally this summer and will cost between $300 and $400, he said. AT&T (T.N) will be its lead carrier in the United States.

Citi Investment Research analyst Jim Suva wrote in a note to clients that the timing of the launch of the third-generation smartphone was ahead of his expectations. Third generation, or 3G, essentially refers to advanced and high-speed wireless services.

"We had expected a 3G device later this year," he wrote. "We estimate the Bold could increase RIM's quarterly shipments by 200,000 to 400,000."

While Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM hopes the Bold will entice corporate users to upgrade the handsets they currently use, Balsillie said he "wouldn't be surprised if it gets picked up by the consumer."

The device will be a test of whether the shaky U.S. economy is making corporations less willing to spend on new wireless hardware. Some analysts have expressed concern that companies will delay upgrades or cut back on spending on items such as the BlackBerry.

RIM helped dispel such worries last month when it delivered a higher fourth-quarter profit and a robust outlook.

UBS analyst Jeffrey Fan wrote in a note to clients he expects the company to launch between three or four new devices this year.

"We believe RIM's broadening portfolio should widen its appeal to the mass market," he wrote.

The Bold features the most vivid display ever on a BlackBerry, a 2-megapixel camera with video recording capability, and a media player for watching movies and managing music collections.

This isn't the first time a BlackBerry has been loaded with multimedia features to catch the eye of the retail customer. RIM has actively worked at diversifying its client base away from the executives, lawyers and other professionals who use the BlackBerry for sending secure wireless e-mail.

More than a third of RIM's 14 million subscribers are now classified as nongovernment and noncorporate.

The company has also rolled out customer-oriented applications such as Facebook software specifically designed for the BlackBerry. Last month, RIM said downloads of the application had topped the 1 million mark.

And in a separate announcement on Monday, RIM and Microsoft (MSFT.TO) said they will provide Microsoft Windows Live services such as instant messaging and e-mail on the BlackBerry.

Its pursuit of consumers has put RIM in increasingly direct competition with devices such as Apple's (AAPL.O) iPhone, which target the broad retail market.

Still, Balsillie said the Bold is aimed first and foremost at the business, or enterprise, audience.

"It's pretty fair to say that the Bold does quite a job for cementing our leadership in the (enterprise) side," he said. "We understand our roots and we understand the priority there."

RIM also announced that, along with Royal Bank of Canada (RY.TO) and Thomson Reuters (TRI.N)(TRI.TO), it will launch a $150 million venture capital fund that will invest in applications and services for the BlackBerry and other mobile platforms.

New details on Nokia E71 and E66

New details on Nokia E71 and E66

Recently, several good quality pictures of the new Nokia E71 and E66 appeared. As far as specifications go, the information is scarce and only a few facts are revealed. Both will have a 3.2-megapixel camera, WiFi, and 128 MB of internal storage.

Nokia E71 is the successor of E61i, with similar design, but slimmer body (10mm instead of 14mm). With that said, it uses QWERTY keyboard as a primary input source, but it has received a slight improvement over the one found on its predecessor. The keys are a bit bigger and closer together, and the space button is twice the size. The battery cover is now made of stainless steel (like the one on E51), above which is situated the autofocus camera with flash. On one of the side view pictures is shown a 2.5 mm headphone jack and a speaker grill at the bottom, this hints that it may possibly have stereo speakers. A GPS folder is shown on the screen, but it is yet unknown if the phone will have a receiver integrated or will be able to use external one only.

The LG Decoy VX8610 is now up on LG's accessories page and shows that it will use the same battery as the VX8700. The most interesting feature of the Decoy is the inclusion of a built-in Bluetooth earpiece, which is detachable from the back. It is also a slider phone, sporting a QVGA display and a unique trackball for menu navigation. Last month, we learned that the Decoy was scheduled for a May 30th launch. Now, with the accessories starting to be listed, we hope that this release date is on-track.

Are 2 Carriers Getting iPhone to India?

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) said in a statement today that it will bring Apple's iPhone to India, Singapore, Australia, and the Philippines this year. Meanwhile, Airtel issued a separate statement saying it will bring the iPhone to India. As it is, SingTel has a stake in Bharti Airtel so the iPhone via SingTel would be made available on the Airtel network in India.

What is curious though is that just last week, Vodafone said it is bringing the iPhone to India later this year, along with nine other countries including the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa, and Turkey. In fact even Telecom Italia announced its deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Italy in the second half of the year, which means the iPhone in Italy too will not remain exclusive to Vodafone's network.

If Vodafone and Airtel are both right, does that mean the Apple iPhone will be brought to India by two carriers? We at Techtree feel this could be the next step in Apple's strategy to do away with their exclusivity clause -- after Italy. Which would bring down prices of the iPhone considerably -- with both telcos vying for a larger share of the Apple pie in India. And for customers, it may well mean good times lie ahead...

Sony Ericsson phone, codenamed "Paris
A month ago, photos showing a new Sony Ericsson phone, codenamed "Paris", appeared on the Internet. Most of them were fuzzy and inconclusive, but today, sharper ones became available, showing the device in all its glory. The photos reveal a hybrid QWERTY keyboard, similar to the P1 and other previous models. Also, a 5-megapixel camera hidden under a protective cover, is clearly visible on the back of the phone.

Sony Ericsson Z555i: Magpie fodder
Do you do when you've created an average phone with average features, but still want to get the punters excited? You make it shiny. The Sony Ericsson Z555i isn't a phone with much to shout about, but it does have a front section that glistens like a hippo's back after it's lunged out of a sub-Saharan pond.

The shiny front section of this clamshell also hides a small screen that displays the time and incoming calls or text messages. Pop it open and you're presented with a small colour screen and a flat but usable keypad. On the back of the Z555i there's a humble 1.3-megapixel camera, which won't inspire much more than MMS messages.

This is a simple phone that looks attractive from the front, but hides a rather mundane bunch of features underneath. Unless you're strapped for cash or have a penchant for shiny things, you're better off going with one of Sony Ericsson's higher-end models. The Z555i will be available on most networks soon -- expect a full review lickety-split. -Andrew Lim
